DEREK DELGADIO'S "IN AND OF ITSELF"

I hope you have Hulu, because if you do, you are in for a treat. I heard about this movie when Derek and the director Frank Oz were on Stephen Colbert's "A Late Show" last week. When talking about it, neither of them could describe what the movie was about, and Stephen agreed (he is also one of the Executive Producers). There really is no way to tell you about this movie without spoiling what happens but I will try to give you some hints.

It is a movie that you must sit down and pay attention. There is actually a disclaimer at the beginning which says something like "turn off your phone, get quiet and pay attention." Not the exact disclaimer, but pretty close. The movie is a filmed version of the play "In and Of Itself" that was a one-man show for Derek. It ran for 552 performance on Broadway. When you get to the theater, there is a wall of "I Am" cards, stating things like "I Am a Teacher," "I Am Generous." There are many cards with many statements and with any luck you will find the perfect card for your personal situation. The cards are an integral part of the experience as there is an audience participation component to the play. Don't want to say much more than that; you are going to have to trust me.

I was blown away by the movie and I think you will be as well. You will laugh, you may sniffle and cry, but most of all, you will be entertained. If you don't have Hulu, I'm fairly certain it is available on You Tube; just find the one that is about 1.5 hours long, not the shorter "trailers" that are also available.

That's about all I can say, except that you really need to try and see this movie. It is life-changing (maybe a little dramatic, but hey...it's me talking here, and we know I'm a drama queen). I have kept thinking about the movie almost constantly since seeing it.

A big thank you goes out to my friend Jerry Kocsis, who recommended the movie in a blog post.

Love and hugs to all, albeit virtual ones. Stay safe, stay healthy, and try to see this movie.
